Unbound Medicine Launches Collaborative Publishing Platform

End-to-End Solution Supports Digital Content from Creation through Delivery

Charlottesville, VA, July 6, 2006 — Today, Unbound Medicine, a leader in knowledge management solutions and mobile information resources for healthcare, announced the release of Unbound Publishing™, a suite of powerful authoring and publishing modules for the Unbound™ Platform. With this addition, the Unbound Platform now supports end-to-end digital publishing activities from content creation through Web, wireless and personal digital assistant (PDA) delivery. The most extensive demonstration of the fully realized Unbound Platform is Harrison’s Practice, a point-of-care product launched today by McGraw-Hill Professional, a leading global provider of information resources for the scientific and medical communities.

Harrison’s Practice was developed in an entirely paperless environment. Authors and editors accessed Unbound Publishing over the Internet from any location and used familiar browser-based functionality to write and edit content. A flexible and easy-to-implement workflow management system allowed the managing editor to customize document routing and user rights based on project needs. Unbound Publishing’s authoring modules supported all pre-publication activities such as structural design, authoring, editing, proofreading, incorporation of media, internal and external linking, and indexing. Sophisticated version control simplified the review of changes and allowed reversion to any previous stage.

“Working in the Unbound Publishing authoring module is a new and refreshing means of writing and editing. It is clearly the wave of the future in publishing,” said Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and one of the editors of Harrison’s Practice. “I liked having the ability to attach comments directed to other members of the editorial team and to quickly incorporate the latest scientific developments that have a direct impact on patient care.”

“We wanted Harrison’s Practice to mark a new direction for one of McGraw-Hill’s most important brands,” said Michael Hays, vice president of McGraw-Hill Professional’s Digital group. “By collaborating with Unbound Medicine we were able to adopt an innovative approach to creating, maintaining, and delivering digital content.”

In addition to the time- and cost-saving advantages of digital content creation, the Unbound Platform supports instantaneous and simultaneous publication of new and updated content to all major digital devices. Users can view the content on the Web, download the content to a PDA, or access the content using a wireless device such as a Smartphone, Treo™ or BlackBerry™. The XML repository created during the editorial process can also be output at any time to support print publication or distribution through other digital channels.

“Adding authoring tools and workflow management to the Unbound Platform completes our end-to-end digital publishing solution,” said Bill Detmer, MD, CEO of Unbound Medicine and consulting editor for Harrison’s Practice. “This project demonstrates that expertise at the intersection of medical knowledge, information architecture, and technology can provide tangible benefits for authors, publishers, and clinicians.”
